Are you a designer?

I am not comfortable calling myself a designer. But, I am more than a seamstress. I sometimes use the term custom seamstress for what I do.  I guess that applies because I frequently make specific things for customers such as "mother of the bride" dresses.

But what I most love doing is taking a fabric and deciding what garment to make it into, whether I will use a pattern or combine more than one pattern or if I will try to copy a ready-made garment, including what type of construction techniques I will use and if I will embellish it or not. It is a very creative process for me. Often when I see a fabric, I know immediately what I want to make out of it. The ideas just start popping in my head. Other times, when I am struggling with what to do or how to do something, I just give it time and an idea comes to me, often in the middle of the night. I am very addicted to sewing. It is on my mind all the time.

How do you determine sizing?

There is a huge discrepancy in sizing in ready made clothes. Pattern makers are supposed to size like ready-made, but they certainly do not. If you wear a size 4 in Ralph Lauren you might wear an 8 at the Gap or a 6 or 10 at Target and who knows which of those sizes in a pattern.

Nothing seems to be consistent. When I did shows, I would say if you like my creation and it fits, wonderful. If it doesn't fit, sorry! But for marketing in stores and online, I try to give sizes comparable to general ready-made sizes. I think the best way to fit is I give measurements of the finished garment which you can then compare to something in your closet which fits well.

Where do you get your fabric?

Anywhere I can find it.  And I have a HUGE amount in my collection.

When I travel, I always look for places to purchase fabrics whether it is fabric stores, antique stores, or designer outlets that sell fabric remnants.  I have had the good fortune to travel to Europe more than once and always bring back as much fabric as I can.  Fabric is available online now and I have been very happy with that option.  When I lived in the Chicago suburbs, I shopped at Fishmann’s Fabrics and Vogue Fabrics, both outstanding stores.  Sometimes I even find fabric I love at Joann’s and even Walmart.  And now people give me fabrics, whether it is yard goods or actual garments of wonderful fabric that I can reuse.  Being a fabric aholic , I can tell by feel and eye if a fabric would be fun to use regardless of where I find it.
