Batik is a technique of drawing on cloth with melted wax and then dipping the cloth in a dye. Where the wax is, the dye cannot penetrate. This can be done several times to have several colors on the cloth.  The small tool shown above the scarf in this photo is the tool with which hot liquid wax would be drawn onto the fabric with.  This scarf was made by people involved in Handy Krafts, a not-for-profit organization committed to small home industries in Indonesia.
